Dehydrogenation of
Heat-Treated Parts
Image of heat-treated metal parts that required dehydrogenation bake-off after chrome plating in order to remove hydrogen from the part and prevent the part from becoming brittle

The postplate metal finishing services of Master Finish Company includes dehydrogenation bake off. Heat-treated steel components may require dehydrogenation bake off after plating to remove hydrogen from the part and prevent embrittlement. Heat-treated parts are heated, or baked, immediately after plating to remove hydrogen molecules from the metal, providing stability and durability.

A typical dehydrogenation bake cycle requires plated parts to enter an oven within 30 minutes after plating. Dwell time in the 200°C (400°F) oven may continue 2 to 4 hours or longer. Parts are then allowed to cool for subsequent inspection and packaging.
